AFC Champions League 2008 Chonburi 3-1 Melbourne Victory
Super sub Baga bags Victory
BANGKOK - Substitute Stephane Baga came on to score two late goals as Thai Premier League champions Chonburi picked up their first win in the AFC Champions League with a stunning 3-1 victory over Australian side Melbourne Victory on Wednesday.
The Cameroonian forward came on with 20 minutes remaining at Supachalasai National Stadium and rifled home a spectacular shot from 30 metres in the 79th minute to restore Chonburi's lead after Daniel Allsopp had cancelled out Fabiano's first-half opener.
The Thais were reduced to ten men with five minutes remaining when Arthit Suntornphit was dismissed after receiving his second caution but Baga settled the matter deep into stoppage time when he drove into the box before sliding the ball past goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos.
Chonburi moved to the top of Group G on goal difference, ahead of Japanese side Gamba Osaka who beat Chunnam Dragons of Korea 4-3 earlier on Wednesday.
The opening 20 minutes were uneventful but the game sparked to life midway through the first half when Fabiano launched a shot from the edge of the Melbourne box that flew just over the crossbar.
On 36 minutes, Fabiano rose high to knock down the ball into the path of Chonburi skipper Pipob On-Mo who surged past the last defender before firing a weak effort that failed to trouble Theoklitos.
The deadlock would be broken though a minute before half-time when a deep cross by Arthit picked out an unmarked Fabiano, who rose unchallenged to send a looping header past Theoklitos.
Melbourne should have drawn level in stoppage time at the end of the firs thalf as Claudio Caceres squared the ball across the face of goal to an unattended Archie Thompson who completely missed the ball from six yards out.
The Australian side drew level two minutes later when a cross from the left flank by Matthew Kemp was turned in by Allsopp in the six-yard box.
The game turned physical and Arthit was lucky to receive only a yellow card in the 65th minute for a lunging challenge on Blagoja Celeski.
Fabiano nearly restored Chonburi's lead two minutes later with a surging run that took him into Melbourne box where he unleashed a shot that took a deflection before coming back off the right post.
Baga came on in the 70th minute and took only nine minutes to make an impact with a superb strike.
The Cameroonian gained possession in the Melbourne half and unleashed a left-footed screamer from 30 metres that flew into the top left corner ofthe Melbourne net giving Theoklitos no chance.
Chonburi held to hold on in the final few minutes with only 10 men when Arthit was needlessly dismissed after being shown a second yellow card for time-wasting but the best chance that Melbourne could muster was a looping header by Allsopp that flew harmlessly over the crossbar.

Lucas leveller flattens Chonburi
OSAKA - Brazilian striker Lucas scored a last-gasp equaliser as Gamba Osaka eked out a 1-1 draw with Thailand's Chonburi FC in Group G of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday evening. Arthit Suntornphit looked to have given Chonburi a surprise win and all three points when he slotted home from close range in the 58th minute after an impressive run by Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano had torn the home defence apart. But Lucas struck from close range deep into injury time to give Akira Nishino's team a share of the points after the Nabisco Cup holders had dominated but were unable to find a way past the Thai defence. Gamba striker Bare went close in the 13th minute when his header crashed against the crossbar and Japan international Yasuhito Endo saw his free-kick pushed around the post by Kosin Hathairattanakool six minutes later, who also denied Shinichi Terada just before the break. The teams went in level at half time but, after several near misses at the other end by Gamba, Chonburi hit the Japanese on the break to stun the home support. Ney Fabiano tore down the right flank before cutting into the penalty area and past Hiroki Mizumoto before hitting a shot that was blocked by a despairing lunge from Hideo Hashimoto. However, the ball broke to the unmarked Arthit and he stroked the ball home with ease to stun the home support. With a major shock on the cards, Gamba threw everything forward but, despite the onslaught, Chonburi managed to deny their more illustrious counterparts for more than 30 minutes. Thai national team goalkeeper Kosin outstanding between the posts, denying Lucas in the 65th minute and keeping out a pair of efforts from Bare in the final 10 minutes. But eventually the Japanese side found a way through to take a share of the points and spare their own blushes. The Chonburi defence was unable to properly clear a lofted ball into the penalty area and former FC Tokyo striker Lucas capitalised at the far post, sliding his shot home in the fourth minute of injury time to break the Thai side's hearts.

Kashima breaks the Bank
BANGKOK - Kashima Antlers kicked off their challenge for this season's AFC Champions League title with a 9-1 thrashing of Thailand's Krung Thai Bank on Wednesday. Yuzo Tashiro, Marquinhos and Takuya Nozawa all scored twice for the J.League champions as they made an emphatic statement of their intent in Group F of this year's continental championship. Tashiro opened the scoring with just 16 minutes on the clock when he had time and space in the Krung Thai Bank penalty area to chest down the ball before slotting past Klisana Klunklin. Five minutes later Daiki Iwamasa doubled Antlers' lead when he strode into the penalty area unmarked to head Mitsuo Ogasawara's header home as Kashima overpowered the Thais. The game was all but over as a contest with 10 minutes remaining of the first half when Nozawa volleyed home Marquinhos' lay-off from just outside the penalty area, beating the goalkeeper to his left. Kashima extended their lead two minutes after the restart when Marquinhos tore down the left before lifting the ball over the keeper. But while Supachai Komslip cleared off the line, Takeshi Aoki followed up to score. Tashiro claimed his second of the game three minutes later when he was put in on goal and, although Klisana saved the striker's first attempt, he slotted home the rebound. Kassim Kone reduced Kashima's lead in the 64th minute when he rose highest to head home from six yards out but just five minutes later Antlers had restored their five-goal cushion when Marquinhos muscled his way through to goal. The former JEF United Chiba, Yokohama F Marinos and Shimizu S-Pulse striker then claimed his second of the game just two minutes later when he again used his strength to evade the home defence before rolling the ball over the line. And just another two minutes had passed when substitute Ryuta Sasaki slotted home from close range after Klisana spilled Nozawa's initial shot. With time running out the scoring looked to be complete, but with the game in injury time Nozawa claimed his second of the match when he strolled in to push the ball over the line with barely seconds remaining.

Keep focus says Kashima coach
BANGKOK - Kashima Antlers coach Oswaldo de Oliveira warned his players against complacency after they breezed to a 9-1 victory over Krung Thai Bank in their AFC Champions League Group F opener on Wednesday. The hosts were never really in the game as Kashima, looking to wrest the continental title from fellow Japanese side Urawa Reds, dominated from start to finish. Yuzo Tashiro, Marquinhos and Takuya Nozawa all helped themselves to two goals each while Daiki Iwamasa, Takeshi Aoki and Ryuta Sasaki also scored to ensure Antlers got their campaign off to an emphatic start. "It is a good start," said de Oliveira. "It makes us very optimistic for the rest of the competition. "The games will get harder and we have to raise our standard. We also have J.League matches so we have to watch the players' condition. "It is too early to say how we will do but we are happy to get the competition off to a good start." Krung Thai Bank coach Attaphol Puspakom admitted the result will make it difficult for his side to progress beyond the group stage. Kassim Kone had reduced the deficit for the Thai side after the hour mark with a header but it did little to stem Kashima's onslaught as they continued to add goals. "At the beginning of the match, we aimed for three points," said Attaphol. "We attacked from the start of the game but our defenders, especially the two full backs, did not mark the Kashima players well and that allowed their players to score easily. "This loss will make it difficult for us to qualify for the next round. In the rest of the matches we will have to play our best. "Kashima have a lot more experience than our players in this tournament.Some of our players are new to the competition." Attaphol's biggest fear is that the defeat could have a damaging effect on the club's form in the domestic league. He added: "We lost this match and surely it will effect our form in the Thailand League because our defenders and goalkeeper will lose confidence. "I think this is the biggest score that we have lost to an opponent by in the AFC Champions League."
Jadet jubilant despite draw
OSAKA - Chonburi coach Jadet Meelarp was delighted with his team's display as the Thai side came within seconds of notching up a shock victory over J.League side Gamba Osaka on Wednesday evening. Only an injury-time equaliser from Brazilian striker Lucas managed to salvage a point for the Nabisco Cup winners after Arthit Sunthornphit had given the Thai champions a surprise lead with 30 minutes remaining. "It was a pity that we couldn't get the three points," said Jadet. "But I'm happy with this outcome although I never expected this. "I don't think we played the way we had planned. But we did our best to defend against our opponents' attack." Jadet admitted he had studied videos of Gamba's most recent performances and that research played a key role in his team's ability to unsettle their opponents. "Gamba are very good at attacking and were as strong as we had expected," he said. "But our tactics and players' skills combined well today." Gamba manager Akira Nishino cut a disconsolate figure after the game and he was not satisfied either with the result or his team's struggles in front of goal. "It was a tough game," said the former Kashiwa Reysol manager. "I knew it could be like this as our opponents have good abilities. But I never thought we would struggle to break them down as much as we did. "Our aim was to pick up three points today but even from early in the first half we could see if wasn't going to be easy. Chonburi were better than I thought. "The only positive thing about today's game is that we scored the goal at the last minute. I was also able to assess the level of our players." Nishino denied his lack of research on the strengths and weaknesses of Chonburi was the reason his side struggled for most of the game. "You shouldn't study your opponents too much, and I'd like to focus on showing our style of football more. Today, we ruined the game because we couldn't score," he said. "I don't think we played that poorly. We need to continue working on what we have been working on, which is how to break down our opponents and score goals."

VA visits Chonburi
KUALA LUMPUR: AFC’s Vision Asia delegation visited Thailand’s Chonburi province recently to assess the current status of football and to identify appropriate goals for football development. Detailed discussions with the officials from Chonburi, including officials from the Thailand League champions Chonburi Football Club, were held during the assessment visit. Vision Asia aims to develop football at all levels in the province, beginning with improving the organisational structure, reorganising competitions, developing coaches and referees and initiating structured grassroots and youth programmes. One of the initial objectives will be to establish a football association in Chonburi. Thanasak Suraprasert, general secretary of Chonburi Football Club, expressed his commitment to the project. “We recognised that new structures need to be implemented to oversee all aspects and levels of football here in Chonburi. With the guidance and assistance of AFC, we look forward to fulfilling this objective.” A tailor-made strategic plan for football development in Chonburi will be designed and agreed with the football officials in the province followed by immediate implementation.

– Thailand head coach Chanvit Polchovin is pragmatic over the appointment of former national team manager Peter Withe in the role of opposition scout. The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) have engaged Withe to assess and analyse Thailand’s 2010 World Cup qualification opponents and Chanvit sees no conflict of interest between himself and the former England international, who led the Thais to the 2000 and 2002 Tiger Cups. ''There is no problem at all because I am handling the coaching and Peter is doing the scouting to check out our opponents so there is no reason for any conflict,'' Chanvit told local media. Thailand entertains Oman in their next 2010 World Cup qualifier on March 26 and will warm-up for the match with the Gulf Sultanate with a friendly against China in Kunming on March 15.
