> DATSAKORN LAGS BEHIND

BANGKOK (Jan 26, 2007) – Datsakorn Thonglao’s fabulous free kick goal against Vietnam was his first in the on-going Asean Football Championship but it has turned out to be a tad too late to catch up with current top scorer Mohd Noh Alam Shah from Singapore.

The Singapore striker is currently at the top of the goal scorers’ list with nine goals to be followed by Thailand’s Sarayoot Chaikamdee with three goals to his credit.

Indonesia’s Atep and Saktiawan Sinaga as well as Hairuddin Omar from Malaysia have all scored two goals each in the competition with the latter having the only real chance of increasing his goal count when Malaysia takes on Singapore in the second leg, semi-finals tomorrow night at the National Stadium.

Inclusive of the two own goals conceded, a total of 34 goals have been scored thus far – which is really a paltry number when compared to two years ago when 113 goals were scored throughout the competition.

But it has to be pointed out however that there are fewer teams taking part this time round with eight teams battling it out when compared to ten in 2004.

It would seem that the decision to have a preliminary qualifying competition which was held in Bacolod City in the Philippines last November has made the Asean Football Championship a lot more competitive.

The top goal scorer in 2004 was Ilham Jaya Kesuma with seven goals while for the current meet; the Indonesian lad could only manage one goal.

CURRENT TOP GOALSCORERS

9 GOALS – Mohd Noh Alam Shah Kamarezaman (SINGAPORE)

3 GOALS – Sarayoot Chaikamdee (THAILAND)

2 GOALS - Atep (INDONESIA), Saktiawan Sinaga (INDONESIA), Hairuddin Omar (MALAYSIA)

> SELL-OUT CROWD EXPECTED AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM

SINGAPORE (Jan 25, 2007) - Singapore's quest for a place in the final of the Asean Football Championship will be given a terrific boost. From the terraces that is.

A full house turn-out of 55,000 is expected at the National stadium on saturday night when Singapore take on Malaysia in the decisive semi-final leg with the tie nicely balanced at 1-1 from the first leg at the Shah Alam stadium.

Already tickets for the match have been on sale since Wednesday and the 5000 grandstand seats priced at S$10 each have been taken up.

"There are only the gallery seats priced at S$6 left and by the end of the day(Thursday) we have sold an estimated 25,000 tickets,"said the FA of Singapore(FAS) Media Officer Eric Ong.

Sales of tickets will continue right up to the day of the match and the FAS is confident all tickets will be sold.

"The signs are very positive. There has been a stready stream of people queing up to buy tickets at our booth at the FAS headquarters in Jalan Besar since the morning.

Ticket sales will go on right up to the afternoon on match day before the 8pm kick off," added Eric.

The Fas have also allocated a couple of thousand tickets to the FA of Malaysia, just in casethere is a request for it.

"Maybe there will be organised trips from the Malaysian fans and we are ready to accept themif they need tickets," added Eric.

According to Eric, the Singapore fans are expected to be dressed in their traditional red just like in the previous final where they beat Indonesia 5-2 in the two-leg encounter.

"Red has always been the colour of the Singapore football fans and it should be no exception this time," he added.

Singapore's best turnout in the championship so far has been the 22,000 crowd for their opening preliminary round Group B match against Vietnam and then followed by the match against Indonesia which attracted a 18,000 crowd to the National stadium.

> HALF A MILLION RINGGIT INCENTIVE AWAITS MALAYSIANS

PETALING JAYA (Jan 24, 2007) - A huge carrot has been dangled in front of the Malaysian football team to turn the tables on Singapore in the second leg Asean Football Championship semifinal clash at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Malaysians stand to walk with a whopping half a million ringgit if they emerge winners of the tournament.

The cash comes from various sources but the main one being the champion's purse of USD$80,000 (RM300,000). Then there's the RM100,000 offered by the Mentri Besar of Selangor, Datuk Khir Toyo.

Nike, the FA of Malaysia's recently signed apparel sponsor and also a sponsor for this tournament, have also offered RM100,000 to the Malaysians if they win the title.

It's a tall order for the Malaysians but the lure of the cash could make the difference. But in order to collect on the cash, the Malaysians must first get past Singapore, the defending champions of the region's most prestigious tournament.

Singapore have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament thus far, and they showed their character when they came back and levelled the score at the Shah Alam Stadium last night. Despite the huge turnout at the stadium, Noh Alam Shah squared the game in the 73rd minute.

The equaliser was a major setback for the Malaysians as they will now have an even harder task of advancing to the final. And with an expected capacity crowd backing the home team, it will take a herculean effort from the Malaysians to stage a stunner in Singapore.

Malaysian coach Norizan Bakar said that what's important was that his team did not lose. "It's still an open game ... we did not lose tonight. The draw means that Singapore will also be under pressure, we can beat them," said Norizan.

And Norizan was right, for Malaysia have gone to Kallang and mauled the Lions in their own den, but that was four years ago in the 2002 Tiger Cup competition. Malaysia won 4-0 then.

> VIETNAM JUMPS TO 134TH

HANOI (Jan 18, 2007) – Vietnam made the biggest move among Asean countries when they jumped 38 positions to 134th in the world following the latest release by international body FIFA.

Vietnam, who will be facing Thailand in the semi-finals of the Asean Football Championship next week, was boosted by their second-placed finish at the 37th King’s Cup which was played in Bangkok last month.

And this week at the Asean Football Championship, the team can certainly look to improve their international standing further following their fine performances in Group B which was played in Singapore.

They held host Singapore to a scoreless draw in their first game before producing another stiff performance to hold Indonesia to a 1-1 stalemate.

They then rounded their last group match with a 9-0 thrashing of Laos to emerge second in the group on goal difference behind Singapore.

In the semi-finals, Vietnam will face Thailand – a repeat of the final of the King’s Cup.

But this time in Hanoi, Vietnam will be hoping for a different end to the one they had the last time in Bangkok.

> DRAW ENOUGH TO SEE SINGAPORE THROUGH

SINGAPORE (Jan 17, 2007) – It was a tremendous battle that had the fans on the edge of their seats. It was so closely contested the match really could have gone either way. In the end, the last preliminary round Group B match between Singapore and Indonesia ended in a 2-2 draw.

While the single point was enough to see the Lions through to the next stage, for Indonesia it meant a premature exit from the tournament, which ended their four run of four consecutive semifinal appearances in this competition.

Singapore, the defending champions and Group B champions here, have set the stage for a sensational showdown with their arch rivals, Malaysia in the first semifinals on Jan 23. Vietnam, who secured the second spot in the group after whipping Laos 9-0 tonight, will battle Thailand in the second semifinals on Jan 24.

Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia all completed their fixtures with five points each, Indonesia however were knocked out on an inferior goal difference.

In tonight’s match at the National Stadium, Indonesia twice fought back to level the score. Singapore had a grant start to this crucial tie when Indra Sahdan Daud was brought down by Indonesia keeper Hendro Kartiko just nine minutes into the match.

Mohd Noh Alam Shah, the scorer of seven goals in his team’s 11-0 rout of Laos two days ago, sent the custodian the wrong way to the delight of the 13,000-plus fans at the stadium.

Indonesia put the goal behind them and charged back, pushing the Singapore defence all the way. Their efforts paid off they leveled the score in the 26th minute through striker Ilham Jayakesuma.

Within a space of three minutes, Singapore and Indonesia scored a goal each. Indra headed the Lions ahead in the 52nd minute but Zainal Aref squared it once again in the 55th minute.

Both sides never relented and battled furiously to the end in their hunt for more goals. Indonesia brought in Bambang Pamungkas while Singapore called on the services of Mohd Khairul Amri but both failed to hit the mark.

> SINGAPORE AND VIETNAM COMPLETE SEMIS CAST

SINGAPORE (Jan 17, 2007) – Defending champions Singapore and Vietnam completed the cast for the semifinals of the Asean Football Championship but Indonesia had to settle for an early exit from the regional tournament.

The Lions were held to a 2-2 draw at the National Stadium but it was enough to see them through to the next round.

For Indonesia, however, the draw left them in third spot behind Singapore and Vietnam, who had whipped Laos 9-0.

The top three all completed their Group B fixtures with five points each but Indonesia obviously were squeezed out on an inferior goal difference.

Singapore, winners two years ago, will face off with traditional rivals, Malaysia in the first leg semifinal showdown on Jan 23. Thailand, the Group A champions, will take on Vietnam in Hanoi on Jan 24.

The second leg of the semifinals will be held on Jan 27 and Jan 28 respectively. The final will be on Jan 31 and Feb 4.

> WITHE LOOKS TO STAY POSITIVE

SINGAPORE (Jan 17, 2007) – Peter Withe is looking to turn around the fortunes of Indonesia in the Asean Football Championship by building a more positive perception around the team

The English coach has had to come to terms with plenty of negative feeling during his two and a half years in charge of the Indonesian national side but says that he is working to change that attitude.

“I’ve always been a positive coach,” said the former England international striker.

“We have a problem in Indonesia with the Indonesian media and with the Indonesian people, to a certain degree, in that they are very much on the down all of the time.

“So the first question that they will ask you is a negative question, and they’re always negative, negative, negative. I’m trying to change that to be positive, positive, positive.

“So when I do press conferences and someone asks me a negative question, I try to reverse that and make it a positive question.”

For Withe, part of the task of building a positive attitude is not to look for excuses for poor performances. He admits that he was disappointed when it appeared that Laos coach Saythong Syphasay had thrown in the towel before his side’s 11-0 defeat to Singapore, downplaying his side’s chances of getting a result and boosting the opposition’s hopes of getting a result.

“Things like that relate to the players so as a coach, I’m always positive in what I do.

"We’ve had major problems in preparing for this tournament but I’ve said nothing about it like the coach of Laos, because if I actually said that, I’d be shooting ourselves in the foot and I’ve never tried to shoot ourselves in the foot.

“You are always trying to be positive about the games you’re playing.”

> THAILAND, MALAYSIA IN SEMIS

BANGKOK (Jan 16, 2007) - Three-time winners Thailand reached the semi-finals of the Asean Football Championship on Tuesday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Malaysia.
A headed goal from Sarayoot Chaikamdee at the start of the second half saw Thailand take top spot in Group A with seven points.

In a major shock, Malaysia also progressed in second spot on four points after Myanmar were held to a 0-0 draw by the Philippines in the other match played concurrently.

Thailand and Malaysia will not know their opponents in the knockout stage until Wednesday when Vietnam take on Laos and Singapore meet Indonesia in Group B in Singapore.

Defending champions Singapore put themselves in the driver’s seat for qualification with an 11-0 thumping of Laos on Monday.

Malaysia beat Thailand 2-1 in the group stages of the 2004 tournament to end their hopes of a successful defence of the title but the home side exacted revenge on Tuesday with a good all round display.

Thailand captain Kiatisuk Senamuang came back into the side after missing the 4-0 victory over the Philippines with a hip injury but influential midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao was on the bench as he was not fully fit.

He was replaced by Pichitphong Choechiu while the experienced Niweat Siriwong came in to central defence in place of Choketawee Promrut.

Malaysia made just one change from the side that drew with Myanmar bringing in Eddy Helmi Manan to replace Thirumurugan Veeran.

Thailand opened strongly but lacked the cutting edge to trouble the Malaysian defence.

The first real chance of the game fell to the normally reliable feet of Kiatisuk in the 19th minute but he blasted over the bar from 14 yards.

Malaysia nearly hit Thailand with a sucker punch in the 36th minute. Mohd Khyril Muhymeen was let through on goal after a slip from central defender Niweat Siriwong but his shot was stopped low down by the goalkeeper.

Thailand should have gone ahead in the 44th minute. Kiatisuk put Sarayoot clean through with a neat ball but the striker, who scored twice in the 4-0 win over the Philippines, delayed too long and scuffed his effort wide.

Sarayoot atoned for his miss with what turned out to be the winner in the 47th minute.

Wing back Suree Sukha, who had an outstanding game, slung over a cross from the right and Sarayoot headed home much to the delight of the near capacity 28,000 crowd.

There were few clear cut chances in the rest of the half with Malaysia defending as if their lives depended on it.

In the 88th minute Irwan Fadzli Idrus was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

MALAYSIA COACH NORIZAN BAKAR

I want to congratulate Mr Chavnit (Thai coach) and the Thailand team for winning the game and going through to the next round.

We had a good game and I must say also congratulations to my team.

Today we played the best of the three matches.

In the first half we gave too much space for the Thais and you cannot do that with a team with such quality.

We started to play only in the second half but we could not get the goals.

But regardless of that we went through in the semi-final stage. That is very important also (for Malaysian football).

We got through because of what happened in all three games.

We won the first game, drew the second and played our heart out tonight but did not get the result.

Again I just have to congratulate my team and also the Thai team for getting through to the semi-finals.

THAILAND COACH CHANVIT PHALAJIVIN

I want to congratulate the Malaysian team . - it was a close game.

We have played together so many times, some we have won, some drawn and some lost. Today both teams showed a lot of spirit trying to get to the semi-final.

We could not lose the game today which put a lot of pressure on our players.

Everybody thinks we are the number one in Asean and cannot lose to any team.

It is very difficult, very difficult. Every time in Asean this is the problem for our team. We are expected to win every game.

We changed a few players today. We try to give a chance to other players because we were worried about the team work.

Some players cannot play under pressure - more spectators mean more pressure.

> Malaysia lose but squeeze into semis

17 January 2007

BANGKOK: Malaysia went down to Thailand 1-0 but scraped into the semifinals of the ASEAN Football Championship on Tuesday after the Philippines held Myanmar to a shock goalless draw in the other group game.
Sarayoot Chaikamdee scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute and Thailand topped Group A with seven points while Malaysia garnered four points to qualify for the last four.
Malaysia, who beat the Philippines 4-0 in the opening game and drew scoreless with Myanmar, will play the Group B winners in the first leg of the semifinals on January 23 while the return leg takes place on January 27.
“We were not aware of the result of the match between Myanmar and the Philippines,” said Malaysian coach Norizan Bakar. “We lost to a stronger Thai side, who were playing in front of their home fans.”
Defending champions Singapore are in a strong position to advance to the semifinals from Group B while Indonesia can book their place in the last four with a win over the hosts today. Vietnam are also in contention and they are up against Laos, who conceded 11 goals against Singapore in their previous encounter.
