> Malaysia lose but squeeze into semis

17 January 2007

BANGKOK: Malaysia went down to Thailand 1-0 but scraped into the semifinals of the ASEAN Football Championship on Tuesday after the Philippines held Myanmar to a shock goalless draw in the other group game.
Sarayoot Chaikamdee scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute and Thailand topped Group A with seven points while Malaysia garnered four points to qualify for the last four.
Malaysia, who beat the Philippines 4-0 in the opening game and drew scoreless with Myanmar, will play the Group B winners in the first leg of the semifinals on January 23 while the return leg takes place on January 27.
“We were not aware of the result of the match between Myanmar and the Philippines,” said Malaysian coach Norizan Bakar. “We lost to a stronger Thai side, who were playing in front of their home fans.”
Defending champions Singapore are in a strong position to advance to the semifinals from Group B while Indonesia can book their place in the last four with a win over the hosts today. Vietnam are also in contention and they are up against Laos, who conceded 11 goals against Singapore in their previous encounter.
